Topic and Contents of the Book Series: The history of empires is a highly studied field of research; not so the history of “imperiality” as a conceptual horizon of exemplary reference for the empire, which still lacks a full comprehensive approach. However, the spread and success of imperial ideology can be measured in relation to the footprint it leaves in non-imperial monarchies. This series aims to investigate these aspects and to comprehensively study Christian “pseudo-empires” in the Middle Ages and in modern times. In other words, it intends to explore all the modalities of the “second imperiality”: the forms of imperiality that sometimes (although in a recurring way) characterize those monarchical or princely institutions, which cannot take on the name of empire, but re-interpret some particular aspects of the Empire.

The series aims to spread the multifaceted research interests developed within the international project “Imperialiter. Le gouvernement et la gloire de l’Empire à l’échelle des royaumes chrétiens (XIIe-XVIIe siècles)”, which in 2017-2022 has involved some European universities (Basilicata, Nantes, Orléans, Madrid), École française de Rome, Casa Velázquez of Madrid, CNRS, Collège de France, Maison française d’Oxford, Laboratoire d’excellence “Religions et Sociétés dans le Monde Méditerranéen” (RESMED).
